P.E . and Sports Premium
Worlebury St Paul's Intent for P.E.
At Worlebury St Paul’s Church School, we believe that physical education (PE) is a vital and unique part of the curriculum. It develops children’s knowledge, skills and understanding so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. PE promotes an understanding in children of their bodies in action and develops coordination skills. It involves thinking, selecting and applying skills, and by enabling children to make informed choices about physical activity throughout their lives, it promotes positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle.
Our aim is to develop the whole child: physically, cognitively, socially and emotionally. Our curriculum enables children to become physically fit and have stamina; emotionally resilient and confident; socially being able to show respect to themselves and others; take responsibility and cognitively understand the importance of physical fitness on their own health and wellbeing. Children will develop interests in a ranges of sports, develop their talents and attain well, making sustained progress across all areas of their age related curriculums.
Implementation of P.E .At Worlebury St Paul's
At Worlebury St Paul’s Church School, we implement our PE curriculum using the Complete PE Physical education Resource by:
- Delivering a minimum of 2 hours of high quality PE lessons a week that provide opportunities for pupils to experience, develop skills and excel in a wide range of sports and physical activity
- Provide opportunities to participate in intra and inter competitions including School Games
- Offer a range of extra-curricular clubs in a range of sports
- Invest in planning, resourcing and staff CPD to increase staff confidence and develop subject knowledge
- Provide opportunities for children to be physically active across the school day, including cross curricular teaching opportunities
- Recognise and celebrate physical, cognitive, social and emotional achievements and progression within sport, both inside and outside school.
Each class has a minimum of two hours of PE timetabled each week, covering:
Games
We aim to provide experiences in a wide range of activities including Football, Tag Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Handball, Hockey, Cricket, Rounders, Tennis and Badminton to develop skills both individually and through participation as part of a team.
Gymnastics
Children develop skills such as travelling, rolling, jumping, and balancing, as well as working on the floor and on apparatus.
Athletics
Children develop running, jumping and throwing skills.
Swimming
All children over Key stage 2 take swimming classes. Being a coastal town, swimming is a very important part of the PE curriculum, given its direct link to ensuring a child's personal safety whenever they are in water.
Dance
Children also participate in dance lessons which gives them the opportunity to express themselves in a controlled way to music and rhythms.
We also offer opportunities for pupils to compete in both intra- (within school) and inter- (between schools) competitions in a range of sports. We feel competition is an element of life which should be experienced within school. Emotional competencies surrounding competition, which are learned in sport, can then be carried into the context of a learning environment and beyond.
