VE Day Celebrations

At home, you have been celebrating by having your own ‘Stay at Home’ VE Day Party to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. It’s been wonderful seeing all the baking, craft and flag making you’ve all been up to. In school, we had our own VE Day Party to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe! After making our own decorations and learning all about VE Day, we enjoyed listening to 1940's music, completing a treasure hunt, playing lots of party games and, of course, eating a delicious picnic!

Coronavirus / Covid 19 Information Updated 8/4/2020

Worlebury St Paul's CEVA Primary School is now closed to all pupils for the forseeable future.  We remain open to provide childcare from 7:45 to 17:30, Monday to Friday for children who are vulnerable and children whose parents are critical to the Covid 19 response and cannot be safely cared for at home.

Children have received home learning packs and additional work will be updated on the school website on class pages.  Updated work will be posted by 15:00 on a Friday.  If you have any questions about your child's learning, teachers are contactable by their class emails (Yr@worleburyprimary.com or Y1@...Y2@...etc).  Please allow up to 48 hours for a response, as teachers will be do their utmost best to reply quickly but may be in school care-giving and so not able to access their emails immediately.

Our school is operational behind the scenes, but staffing numbers are significantly reduced, so please be patient if you contact us for help and support.  For general enquiries it is best to email the school at office@worleburyprimary.com.

These are extraordinary times for everyone within our community and globally!  We fully expect our school to reopen when the Department for Education and Public Health England advise us to.  We understand that the uncertainty that this creates for us all and we know with the strength and support of the whole community we will flourish and become stronger.

Mental Health and Wellbeing 

It is very important for not only safeguarding support to be provided but also pastoral and wellbeing support and advice to all our children and their families.  Thus we would like to ensure that we continually engage with families and their children.  At the very least, we would like to ensure that parent / carers are engaging with classteachers using the class emails weekly.  Even if it is just a quick email to the classteacher to check in on how the week has been at home. 

Please don’t be offended if you are contacted directly, as staff will want to maintain close contact and relationships with you all whilst we are within the COVID 19 school closure approach.

Mrs Garland, our school’s Assistant SENCO / Learning Mentor, has been providing ongoing pastoral / emotional support for many children and families but has also provided valuable advice, support and sometimes just a listening ear, to any family who has felt the need. 

So that Mrs Garland is able to continue to support children who have had ongoing support, she will be contacting families over the next few weeks to see how things are and, if parent/carers are comfortable, she will talk to the children themselves.   However, if any family (regardless of whether their children have ever seen Mrs Garland) would like to speak to Mrs Garland, she can be contacted directly. 

With respect to children speaking to classteachers, if you feel your child would benefit from a quick check in call from their classteacher, please email the school office and request this.  I would ask though, if you wish for your child to speak directly to Mrs Garland or their classteacher, please could you ensure that you remain in the room during the phone call or, if possible, put the phone on speaker.

 

Resources / Advice to support from Mrs Garland:

Helping children and young people to cope when someone dies.

Talk about the person who has died, it’s important for them to share how they are feeling. 

Use photos, stories or create a scrap book to remember good things about that person.

Create a memory box, this can include photos, shells, personal objects, poems and messages to remember that person. 

Encourage them to capture an event or memory of the person, ditch the sadness and switch to the positive thought or special memory.

Notice their mood changes, show empathy, acknowledge their feelings and give them time to process what you say before expecting a response.

Don’t feel bad about sharing your own grief, it is ok for them to see you are upset as well.

Domestic Abuse

Abuse can be physical, emotional, psychological, financial or sexual. Anyone forced to alter their behaviour because they are frightened of their partner or anyone living with them should seek help.

Domestic abuse/violence can happen to anyone, regardless of age, social background, gender, religion, sexuality or ethnicity. Whilst domestic violence/abuse happens in all relationships (heterosexual, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender), statistics show the vast majority of domestic violence incidents are carried out by men and experienced by women.

Domestic violence is a crime. We all have a role to play in bringing domestic violence to an end.

Helping children to deal with Corona virus

As soon as your child has questions, or notices that things are increasingly different, you’re going to have to be prepared to talk to them. The issue is how differently you talk to a five-year-old and a 15-year-old. Five-year-olds still live in a world of magic, things are real to them in ways they aren’t to older children. So the virus is a terrifying thing, and they can’t think logically. Keep your answers short … mostly they’ll be reading how you’re feeling more than anything that you have to say. They may be picking up snippets from television broadcasts, social media and on-line games with friends.

If you have older children it’s a great opportunity to work with them around how they hear media, what it means, and what reliable media sources are. You might say, “I’m sure you’ve noticed things are different around here, do you have any questions?” You can use this as a check in from time to time. Really young children don’t need a lot of information, they need their questions answered. They’re not distinguishing simple things: many people who are sick don’t have coronavirus; most people who have coronavirus aren’t going to die. If your child has a fear about how the coronavirus is going to affect a grandparent or a vulnerable family member, as a parent or carer you should be honest. You might say, “You know, coronavirus can make older people, or people with some health problems more sick than younger people. That’s why we want to make sure we’re washing our hands, sneezing into our arm or a clean tissue and putting our hand up when we cough.”

Encourage regular contact, if possible, with vulnerable relatives through phone, texts or face time. This will help to reassure children.

Childcare Provision for Keyworker's Children

We will be closed for Easter bank holidays and Easter weekend as provision is not needed by many. However should anyone need cover at short notice, the Local Authority can help.
